There’s a magical world of science all around us, exerting forces that shape our reality. Professor Wow! uses his mind-boggling circus skills to reveal these invisible forces that are right under our noses. Using floating objects, he brings the concept of lift to life, helping kids understand how airplanes fly. He breaks the sound barrier with the crack of a bullwhip to give students a visceral understanding of speed’s powerful forces. With expert juggling and balancing skills, plus help from audience volunteers, Professor Wow! demonstrates Newton’s three laws of motion and more.

Since 1998, Aytahn Ross has wowed and educated one million people around the world as a solo artist as well as with his signature character, The Great Balanzo. Green Thumb Theatre (BC): The Shape of a Girl By Joan MacLeod (Grades 8-12)

The Shape of a Girl image

What does it mean to be part of the in crowd? In an imaginary letter to her absent older brother, Braidie struggles to understand news stories about the torture and murder of a local teenage girl and how the brutality she sees in the headlines is reflected in her own friend group. Revisiting memories, Braidie tracks her own complicity and participation in the bullying of one girl and considers what it means to go too far.

The Shape of a Girl challenges audiences to interrogate their capacity to both help and harm others and to be brave when standing up for what is right. As relevant as ever, Green Thumb Theatre premiered The Shape of a Girl over 20 years ago, and the piece has since gone on to hundreds of productions worldwide. The Shape of a Girl goes far beyond a simple dramatization of the seemingly inexplicable code of silence and tacit complicity which surrounded the sensationalized Reena Virk murder in 1997 on which the play is based. It speaks eloquently and compassionately to a world increasingly dominated by all forms of collectivized and ritualized tribalist hatred, and offers the embrace of trust as the only way out of this circle of violence.

Dealing with themes of bullying, group dynamics, teen violence, and asking for help, the play and its themes continue to be as relevant as ever, as demonstrated by the 2024 release of the Hulu TV mini-series Under the Bridge.

Founded in 1975, Green Thumb Theatre is a force within the field of theatre for young audiences, not only in British Columbia but across the country and throughout the world.  In its nearly 50-year history, Green Thumb has performed for over 5 million people and has toured to every province and two territories in Canada, 36 US States, and 11 countries overseas. Committed to producing excellent material that is rewarding for artists and audiences alike, Green Thumb remains in high demand because we place youth engagement and artistic integrity on an even plane.  Green Thumb Theatre creates and produces plays that explore social issues relevant to the lives of children, youth, and young adults. We provide theatre that celebrates the language and stories of today’s generation and culture to stimulate empathy, debate, and critical thinking. | WEBSITE

Testimonial:

“Michael performed at our middle school.  The students enjoyed the interactive and humorous show.  ‘It was a 10/10’, said a Grade 7 student after the show.  Michael had several different puppets keeping the attention of the students, each with a unique way of showing Michael’s incredible talent.  The student audience laughed along and so did the adults. My favourite part of the show was when the students noticed the eyes of the drawing were moving? We were all astonished especially when he gave the drawing to a student.  I would highly recommend Michael Harrison!  He puts on a GREAT show.” – Springvalley Middle School, BC

Axis Theatre (BC): Where Have All the Buffalo Gone? (Grades 4-12)

karima photo

Axis Theatre Company exists to create physical theatre for the young and young-at-heart - exploring aspects of clown, commedia dell'arte, music, movement, and puppetry to produce original plays. In the age of “looking down” at electronics, Axis Theatre draws young eyes up to engage them in interactive experiences that educate, inspire, and transform. Telling stories in unique ways, Axis Theatre is guided by these words: inventive, youthful, kinetic, multicultural, smart, and engaging.  Axis Theatre’s rich 49-year history has inspired 60+ new creations. Our productions tour all over BC across Canada, into the United States and sometimes, overseas. We have been recognized with many Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards and as Touring Company of the Year by the BC Touring Council.

Where Have All The Buffalo Gone? follows two Métis souls through four love stories in four distinct periods of Métis history. We bear witness to the emergence of the Métis nations across the plains, the robust colonization that arises from the fur trade, the disappearance of the buffalo and the political uprising of the Métis Association of Alberta. The story begins during creation amongst the stars and ends in the present day.

Where Have All The Buffalo Gone? specifically shares scenarios from the Callihoo family’s stories, incorporating fiddle music, jigging and a life size buffalo puppet. Inspired by historical events of the Métis people of Canada, this original play for young audiences explores the loves, the losses and the fight of Treaty 6’s Métis people – and their love and kinship to the buffalo. | WEBSITE

Testimonials:

- “My class absolutely loved the show - the story, acting, puppet, lighting and set have all been talked about in our debriefs! They enjoyed all of the magic you created. Thank you as well for the Q&A at the end. Very enriching for our young audience.”  Norma Rose Point Elementary

- “Axis Theatre’s Where Have All the Buffalo Gone? proved to be a thrilling and engaging production. As a music/theatre performer myself, I admire the effort put forth by all three actors. Their dynamics together were lovely to watch. Not only was it the first time I had watched a performance with only three actors, but I also learned a lot about Métis culture, arts, and history. The story is told so audiences can hold onto the rich knowledge. Where Have All the Buffalo Gone? is an intricately thought-out play with charm and knowledge, and I hope it can reach a bigger, broader audience.,” KItsilano Secondary (Grade11)

- “Our students LOVED the performance last week!”  Norma Rose Point Elementary

- “I think the stage lighting was cool because you could tell what time of day it was, and the music described how the actors felt. And overall, the play was really interesting and cool, and you all did a really great job! Grade 4 student, Norma Rose Point Elementary
