Building Audiences, Increasing Revenues Workshop

Date: Friday, October 18
Time: 1pm-4pm
Location: Saskatoon Inn, Ballroom C
Facilitator: Jerry Yoshitomi
Sponsored by MNP

AIOJerry Yoshitomi empowers, transforms and advocates for under-served and rural communities, resulting in innovation and change in arts organizations in North America and beyond. Methods from his writings/workshops have been successfully implemented by several thousand arts organizations and artists in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the U.K., the Philippines, Japan, Spain, Argentina and Chile. He is engaged by foundations, public arts agencies, arts organizations and individual artists to read, research, and provoke innovative new practices to increase clarity of purpose, engagement and earned and contributed revenue.

His workshops reaching participants from every Canadian Province and Territory have been supported by Canadian Public Arts Funders, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Council, the British Columbia Touring Council, Ontario Presenters, the Atlantic Presenters Association and the Manitoba Arts Council.

Work in the United States has been supported by a diverse array of public arts agencies and foundations, including the Washington State Arts Commission, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Arts Midwest, Western Arts Alliance, the Alliance for California Traditional Arts, and the Irvine, Wallace, Hewlett, and Mellon Foundations.

He serves as Facilitator for a Consortium of Performing Arts Centers at Major U.S. Research Universities. His longest tenured position was seventeen years as the Executive Director of the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in Los Angeles. During that time, the JACCC presented more performances and premieres of Japanese artists than any other theatre outside of Japan. Jerry is a graduate of Stanford University with a Master’s in Public Administration from Arizona State University.

Increasing audiences in smaller communities differs from practices in larger communities. It’s less about mass marketing and more about person to person communication, sharing our stories of why it’s been personally meaningful to those now participate. In a fast paced, interactive workshop, we’ll learn how to more effectively capture and share stories to build audiences and increase revenues.

Everyone in our current audience is a storyteller whose words, effectively directed, can convince others of the power of arts experiences to bring people together, experience joy in their lives and improve the quality of life in our communities. In preparation, we’ll be asking you to bring a story or two about people who connected and/or shared joyous experiences as a result of your work.

JerryYour audiences love the work that you do. We just need to create easy pathways for them. People are willing and able to support with renewable contributions providing an ongoing base of support for your good work, and a feeling of ownership in them. You’ll learn simple, easy to deploy, painless methods, designed for organizations with small budgets. Even those who “hate fundraising” will come away inspired.

This is one of Jerry Yoshitomi’s signature workshops. He and colleagues from around the world have invested years learning about and honing in on the ways that grassroots organizations activate their strengths to create sustainable sources of support for their futures. This is our real power.
